Don’t Let Your H.V.A.C. Let You Down!

Typical HVAC Controls

You hear the statement, “There’s a problem with the HVAC unit and we have to look for the root cause. It could be mechanical or electrical, but we need to test a little further to get it working right.” Wow, you we’re just given a earful and you’re standing there trying to digest it all. Don’t panic, it’ll all make sense in just a minute.

First, let’s understand the acronym that we use today to describe what H.V.A.C. stands for. Heat, Ventilation and Air Conditioning system. You’re probably more familiar with hearing that term describe your very own “at home” systems of air conditioning, heaters, heat pumps, etc. Today, we in the auto trades are borrowing the same terms to describe the newer types of systems being installed in your cars today.

It used to be that cars would have separate systems of heating, cooling (engine) and air conditioning. Each system could run independent of each other without effecting the overall performance and capabilities of the others. Meaning, that if the air conditioner wasn’t working, you still could operate the defrost, the heater or at least get fresh air through the vents with usually no problems. There wouldn’t be any Check Engine Lights or warning lights coming on to indicate a problem. And the manual position levers or knobs would allow you to direct air (hot or cold) to where you need it.

When’s the last time you had you’re air conditioning system inspected or even refilled? It’s getting hotter out and there’s nothing wrong in getting a little check up to keep you cool for the summer. Now moving forward in today’s cars, everything from the engine cooling system (radiator, waterpump, cooling fans) to the air conditioning system (compressor, evaporator, condenser, dryer and belts) and heating system (heater core, hoses, controls) are integrated in order to create a more manageable cabin environment (read: comfortable) while producing better fuel mileage to meet air quality standards. All of this is accomplished through precise control and use of each of these systems through a computer processor and various sensors that read and react to engine speed, engine temperature, desired cabin temperature and even transmission position. As you well know, today’s cars are nothing like the older versions.
